Rev. Dr. Almut Nothnagle (born in 1958) studied theology in Berlin and Leipzig. After her PhD dissertation and internship, she moved to the United States in 1988, where she became ordained in the United Church of Christ/Disciples of Christ and was appointed pastor of a UCC congregation in Buffalo/New York. After her return to Germany in 1991, she worked for six years as a school pastor. From 1997 to 2012, she was in charge of the Middle East and Tanzania desk (later press release and public relations desk) and served as acting secretary of the Jerusalem Society e.V. at the Berlin Mission (BMW). During that time she was responsible for the operative work of the Lutheran school Talitha Kumi in Palestine on behalf of the BWW. After four years as a school pastor she took over the Middle East and Africa desk at the EMW.
The Head of the Desk Africa and the Middle East is in charge of EMW´s cooperation with continental (All Africa Conference of Churches - AACC, Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa - PROCMURA), regional (Middle East Council of Churches - MECC), as well as National Church Councils (e.g. Sierra Leone, South Africa, Kenya, Sudan) and partners. In close cooperation with the Desk for Theological Education contacts are upheld with many ecumenical theological institutions all over Africa and the Middle East. In Germany, he chairs the Coordinating Roundtable of WCC´s Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel - EAPPI, which comprises two Mission Societies, Pax Christi and Bread for the World officers as well as delegates from the Network of volunteers.
Twice a year EMW convenes the “Africa Forum”, where Africa Secretaries of German-speaking mission societies and Church-related Organisations meet.
Alternating with the EKD-Secretary for the Middle East, the Head of the Desk Africa and the Middle East is responsible for the Protestant Middle East Commission (EMOK), which serves as a platform of Middle-East related protestant missions, Churches and organisations and advises the EKD, e.g. on the Israel-Palestine conflict (2009), the Kairos-Document (2010), and the Syria Crisis (2012-2017). Further Information you will find on the EKD website.
